ABSTRACT
This study was designed, to investigate the differential effectiveness of Cognitive Self Modelling (CSM) and Participant Modelling (PM) strategies in fostering social competence in adolescents.
A 3 x 2 factorial design was used in the study. 60 adolescents comprising equal number of male and female subjects were also used, subjects mean age ( age) was 16.26 with an age range of 3 (18 - 15 years). Four standardized instruments were used as criterion measures, while treatment lasted for a period of nine weeks including a four week follow-up interval.
Results indicated a superior display of social maturity by the experimental groups when compared with the control group at post test (f = 22.39; df = 54; p < .01, CSM Vs PM: t = 1.49; df = 38; N.S, CSM Vs NTG :t = 3.94; df = 38; PM Vs NTG : t=5.42; df = 38; P < .01 ) . This indicates that treatment strategies were effective, with Participant Modelling being more effective.
Male subjects who were exposed to PM responded less favourably to treatment than those who were exposed to CSM while female subjects improved significantly with PM as opposed to CSM when compared on the same variable (SAD) as of the male (f = 10.65; df = 18; p < .01 and t = 14.59; df = 18; P < .01).
No significant difference was noticeable in the social competence displayed by both male and female subjects in the experimental groups when evaluated on attitudes toward social activities within the school environment (f = 0.55; df = 56; N.S.). Both treatment strategies were equally effective in reducing. Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) and Social Avoidance and Distress (SAD) tendency in both male and female subjects in the experimental groups (f = 0.67; df = 56; NS, and f = 0.39; df=56; N.S respectively).
Subjects in the two experimental groups showed differential response to treatment in self disclosure tendency with an f value of f = 13.57; df = 56; P < .01. Sex difference rather than treatment strategy was discovered to be responsible for differences in the scores of the groups here.
Both experimental groups showed a high level of social competence when compared with the control group at a four week follow-up interval as can be seen in the following F ratio and t values; F = 31.42; df = 54; p < .01. t = CSM Vs PM : t = 2.63; df = 38; P < .01 CSM Vs NTG : t = 11.45; df = 38; P < .01, PM Vs NTG: t = 14.09; df = 38; P < .01.
Data were analyzed through the computation of analysis of covariance and t test statistics. Implication of findings for social workers, school administrators, teachers and parents was discussed. Problems were equally raised for further research works.
